Food Coupons / Cards -
Don't keep writing checks to the grocery store. Yes, you do have to eat but there is a better way. Do buy food cards / coupons through the band. Eat healthy and add $$ to your student account. Need a recipe for a dinner or get-together? Check out “Eat to the Beat, Encore edition” the official 2010 Broughton Band Cookbook, full of tasted and proven recipes.
Magazines -
Don’t let the customers complete the order forms. This is the student’s responsibility and should be done carefully, legibly and accurately. Sure it takes time, but you will appreciate it when they don’t come back or your customer thanks you for the early arrival of the magazines. Do ask everyone you know to buy magazines. You can offer them at a better rate and they will be buying from someone. Hey, you get 40% of the sale. DO ASK POLITELY, you will get more.
Fruit and Smoked Meats -
Don’t take orders early. In recent years we have had to delay just to find out if there was a supply of fruit available. Pricing is put off to the very last minute trying to get a lower cost. The H&S Fruit and Southern Heritage Meats have a tremendous following because they are the best fruit and meats available. Do sell the entire line – oranges, grapefruit, turkey, hams, and more. You have the best tasting pieces of any holiday table, help your customers enjoy every delicious selection. Don’t be afraid to collect checks with the order. Prepaid orders are easier to deliver.
Parents -
Don’t do your child’s work for them. You would not think of going to class to take an exam for your son / daughter. Don’t do their band work for them either. The students are told, in great detail, how to complete the orders. You were not there for the lesson, DON’T do their work incorrectly – sit them down and make them follow their instructions.
Do review the orders, Do ask questions about the forms, Do ask them weekly, even daily, if they have filled out the forms. Do make sure they are legible, complete and the math is accurate. Part of being a parent is guiding the children through the maze of life, but not living it for them.
Don’t be surprised to see sloppy, inaccurate or incomplete forms come back. Don’t be surprised to see penalties for orders turned in late or illegible. Don’t get upset when a Band Booster calls trying to get a bad order corrected. Instructions are easy to follow - your student should follow them and reap the rewards of a job well done.
Finally, DO volunteer to help with the audits and fruit deliveries (yes there are two). Do spend the Saturdays going to competition - you may find your most memorable experiences with your children in band. Do come to football games and see the band program develop. Do be a big part of your child’s life – but don’t try to take shortcuts nor walk their roads for them.
This is going to be a GREAT YEAR, Be a Part of it with your children!!
